What's inside
A quick-check for each of the five Healthy Homes standards for New Zealand private rentals — the exact standards HammerHand assesses, numeric pass/fail, in the app.
Ventilation: every habitable room needs at least one window, door or skylight that opens to the outside and can be fixed in the open position — with the openable area totalling at least 5% of that room’s floor area.
Heating — exceptions: a fixed heater installed before 1 July 2019 can still qualify if it meets the conditions (for example, combined capacity of at least 80% of what’s required, and it’s not an open fire or unflued burner). Where the required capacity is over 2.4 kW and the shortfall is 2.4 kW or less, a smaller fixed electric “top-up” heater may be added to make up the difference.
Informational only — confirm details against Tenancy Services, and for heating capacity use the official Heating Assessment Tool. Figures last checked August 2026.
